Functional Muscle Testing

Would you like a window into why your patients keep breaking down and whether your therapeutic intervention is on the right track? Then manual muscle testing can be a hugely powerful tool for pre and post testing of your patients’ function.
A screening routine as well as a simple concept for using muscle testing in your daily practice, regardless of your treatment technique.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Muscles protect us from everything life throws at us by providing strength, control, flexibility and stability. The majority of the neurological control mechanisms happen with no conscious control through a series of spinal cord and cerebellar reflexes. These reflexes are continuously fed with afferent input from joints, tendons, muscles, fascia etc etc. This means that we as humans can concentrate on the task in front of us, be it running past defenders with a rugby ball, pole vaulting or bending down to pick up a piece of paper, without having to worry about the vast number of coordinating and stabilizing reflex movements that need to happen in order that we can do these tasks safely.
This seminar describes a theory where an abnormal afferent input from for example a poorly functioning joint, a hypertonic muscle, an injured ligament or myofascial adhesions has the potential to disturb these reflexes. Essentially, if the aberrant afferent input is ‘different’ enough from what is expected by the massively complex ‘black box’ of neurological coordination, then efferent firing to the muscles that need to protect and support us is compromised.
When you find and treat the source of the disturbed sensory input which compromised the efferent output to the muscle – and then return the muscle to full strength – you have an important insight into what may have compromised this patient’s adaptive capacity and caused their injury.

This concept works regardless of your treatment technique. It is not meant as a ‘system’, a cookbook approach or the only way to get your patients better, but it is a simple yet hugely effective tool, which is easy to apply and integrate into your existing examination procedures

CONTENT

This lecture will examine the neurological basis for functional manual muscle testing and present a screening routine as well as a simple concept for using muscle testing in your daily practice. We will look at a new paradigm for understanding injury, which is rooted in well understood principles and research and which offers a different yet very logical approach.

AIM

The following Monday morning, you will be able to:

  • Immediately show the effect of your treatment
  • Hugely increase patient compliance by showing immediate functional change
  • Get clues to help you find those difficult underlying problems – not just treat compensations
  • Presenting a model of patient management focused on maintaining your patient’s adaptive range and patient led outcome goals

Language

The course will be held in English

Compensation

It will not be possible to apply for compensation
